Pet food shoppers are reading ingredient panels with new intensity. ADM's 2026 Pet Nutrition Insights Report, citing a 2025 Innova Pet Owners Survey, says 62% of pet owners identify ingredient lists as the top reason for switching pet foods. A separate 2025 ADM OutsideVoice survey found that 77% of global pet parents would pay more for products featuring functional ingredients, while 84% of global pet owners are interested in products that may help increase their pet's lifespan.
For pet food brands, that creates both an opportunity and a higher bar. A recognizable ingredient name can attract attention, but the next question is immediate: What does this ingredient actually bring to the formula?
Blueberries and cranberries already have strong superfruit recognition. Red raspberries are familiar, but their seed fraction is largely missing from the pet food conversation. That makes red raspberry seed powder interesting, not simply because it is another berry ingredient, but because it offers a different combination of concentrated seed fiber, a residual seed oil fraction with an ALA-rich fatty-acid profile, and raspberry polyphenol chemistry, together with a traceable upcycled origin.

A 2025 analysis of 40 commercial dog and cat kibbles listing blueberries found minimal to nonexistent concentrations of the free phenolics the researchers measured. The study does not dismiss blueberries. It highlights a practical truth for functional formulation: ingredient form, inclusion rate, processing, and verified composition matter.
Red raspberry seed powder gives brands an opportunity to tell a more specific story. Natural Seed Fiber: A Clear R&D Opportunity
Berry Beautiful's current red raspberry seed powder specification sets a minimum of 40% crude fiber, along with a minimum of 7% protein and a maximum of 10% fat. A recent production lot measured 50.03% crude fiber, 8.22% protein, and 4.88% fat. Those lot results are not universal guarantees, but they show what current production documentation can provide.
Historical Berry Beautiful powder testing measured approximately 70% total dietary fiber as received using a modified AOAC 991.43 method. Total dietary fiber and crude fiber are different analytical measurements, so the numbers should not be compared as if they were the same test. The useful point is that both analyses identify fiber as a defining part of the ingredient.
Berry Beautiful is expanding its analytical program to quantify the soluble and insoluble fiber fractions in current powder. Those results will add functional detail, while the existing total dietary fiber and crude fiber data already establish fiber as a defining part of the ingredient.
Dietary fiber has established functions within complete diets. Less fermentable and insoluble fractions can contribute bulk, while fermentable fractions can provide substrates for gut microbes that produce short-chain fatty acids such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate. Butyrate is an important energy source for cells lining the colon.
This gives formulators a rational basis to evaluate red raspberry seed powder in products designed around digestive function. It is not the same as proving that the powder is a prebiotic or that a particular inclusion level will produce a health outcome. Prebiotic is a more specific term that requires evidence of selective use by host microorganisms and a resulting health benefit.
Fiber type and inclusion level still matter. Canine research comparing fiber sources shows that different materials can produce different effects on digestibility, fecal characteristics, fermentation, and microbial activity. At some inclusion levels, fiber can also lower apparent nutrient digestibility. Formulators therefore need to evaluate the ingredient within the complete food matrix rather than assume that every fruit fiber behaves the same way.
Residual Seed Oil: A Plant-Based ALA Story
Cold pressing removes most of the raspberry seed oil, but a small lipid fraction remains in the milled seed material. Historical powder samples measured approximately 5.6% to 6.0% residual fat, and the recent production lot referenced above measured 4.88%.
Berry Beautiful also has a powder-specific fatty-acid analysis. The laboratory began with the finished red raspberry seed powder, extracted the oil remaining in it, and analyzed the fatty-acid composition of that residual lipid. Within the extracted residual-lipid fraction, approximately 33.3% was alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), 52.1% was linoleic acid, and 10.4% was oleic acid.
This is an accurate characterization of the oil that remains within the seed fiber. The percentages describe the fatty-acid makeup of the extracted residual lipid, not percentages of the powder as a whole.
Published analyses of cold-pressed red raspberry seed oil have likewise identified ALA as a major fatty acid and documented tocopherols, carotenoids, total phenolic content, and antioxidant properties in the oil. That research helps place the residual lipid in a broader seed-composition context, while Berry Beautiful's powder-specific analysis remains the basis for the percentages reported above.
ALA is a plant omega-3 fatty acid, while linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid. ALA should not be presented as interchangeable with preformed EPA or DHA. In a small canine supplementation study, preformed EPA and DHA increased the measured Omega-3 Index, while ALA from flaxseed oil did not.
For formulators, the important point is that red raspberry seed powder is not chemically identical to an isolated fiber. It retains a modest lipid fraction with a recognizable berry-seed fatty-acid profile. The contribution of that fraction to a finished food will depend on the powder's residual-fat level and its inclusion rate.
A Matrix That Carries More Than Fiber
Fiber can also carry plant compounds through the upper digestive tract. In a study involving 48 healthy adult dogs, researchers tested foods containing 0%, 1%, 2%, or 4% of a mixed fiber-bound polyphenol ingredient. The ingredient included pecan shells, flax seed, and cranberry, citrus, and beet powders. Several fecal plant metabolites increased at all inclusion levels, while butyrate, valerate, and hexanoate increased from baseline in the 4% group.
The study did not contain red raspberry seed powder, so it is not evidence of a raspberry-specific result. It does support a useful general mechanism: some compounds carried within plant-fiber matrices can reach the colon and be transformed by microbial activity.
That is more precise than saying fiber broadly “unlocks other nutrients.” The relevant opportunity is the bioaccessibility and microbial transformation of particular compounds carried within a specific plant matrix. Red raspberry seed powder is a logical ingredient for R&D teams to examine through that lens.
The Red Raspberry Polyphenol Story
Red raspberries are known for ellagic-acid-related polyphenols, including ellagitannins. These compounds help distinguish raspberry chemistry from the anthocyanin-led story more commonly associated with blueberries.
Published research on defatted raspberry seeds provides useful composition context. Research on defatted raspberry seed material identified dietary fiber as its main component and ellagitannins as its main polyphenols, with sanguiin H-6 and lambertianin C prominent. Other research on cold pressing and raspberry seed cake has likewise reported free and total ellagic acid in extracts made from the material remaining after oil extraction.
Berry Beautiful's own historical powder testing measured approximately 0.85 mg/g free ellagic acid and 18.4 mg/g total ellagic acid after acid methanolysis.
Together, those measurements show that free ellagic acid is only part of the powder's composition. Acid methanolysis also releases ellagic acid from hydrolyzable compounds associated with ellagitannins, revealing a much larger ellagic-acid-related pool. The 18.4 mg/g result is reported as total ellagic acid after hydrolysis, not as a direct measurement of intact ellagitannins.
These historical results are not a current content guarantee, but they confirm measurable ellagic-acid-related chemistry in Berry Beautiful powder. As additional lots are analyzed, Berry Beautiful can supplement that foundation with total-polyphenol measurements and selected intact ellagitannin profiles.
For formulators, the stronger story is the whole matrix: concentrated seed fiber, a modest residual lipid fraction with an ALA-rich fatty-acid profile, and naturally occurring raspberry polyphenols. That combination gives R&D teams several reasons to evaluate the ingredient within a complete formula rather than treating it as an isolated fiber. Published research supports the formulation rationale; Berry Beautiful-specific pet feeding work would be needed to substantiate a defined physiological outcome.
Upcycled, Traceable, and Ready to Be Understood
Mintel's public description of its 2026 pet food outlook says the category is set to evolve with environment-first nutrition sources and nutrient-dense upcycled ingredients. ADM separately reports that consumers are looking for greater ingredient transparency.
Red raspberry seed powder fits both conversations naturally. It creates another useful ingredient from a seed stream already generated during berry processing, and it comes with a direct Northwest agricultural and manufacturing story.
